Komagvær
Komagvær
In summer this is a great area to observe Whooper Swans, divers, skuas, Bluethroats, Lapland Bunting and many more species thriving in the northern tundra. The birding can often be great all the way from the fjord to the national park border. Along the valley is also one of the best places to see Arctic Skua and Long-tailed Skua in Varanger:
The long sweeping Varanger road that runs adjacent to the Komagvær beach is a good place to check the beach to the east and the dunes to the west. The dune system is used by White-tailed Eagles to rest, Bluethroats can be seen in the scrub. Bar-tailed Godwit, Whimbrel, Ruff, Sanderling and other waders use the beach to feed. A small pond by the sea here may hold Long-tailed Ducks, Greater Scaups, Red-necked Pharalopes and Wood Sandpipers. The farmland fields are good places to see hunting Short-eared Owls and grazing geese.
