The road itself is good for birding in summer, Rough-legged Buzzards and Long-tailed Skuas are commonly seen hovering by the roadside, looking for Lemmings and Voles. Breeding plumage Lapland Bunting, Snow Buntings, Shorelark and Arctic Redpoll can be encountered. Small bushes may hold Bluethroat and Fieldfares. Willow Grouse and Rock Ptarmigan are all possible, and are the main prey for Gyrfalcon, which may be seen anywhere in this area. Black-throated and Red-throated Divers, Greater Scaup, Long-tailed Duck, Nothern Pintail and Whooper Swan all nest in the area surrounding Gednje.

The higher parts of Båtsfjordfjelllet are one of the most reliable places to see Dotterel, a breeding wader exclusive to the highest of tundra. They nest among the rocks and short turf by the roadside. Enjoy the birding but be sure not to disturb breeding birds. Note that in Norway it is forbidden by law to disturb breeding birds!
